Lisa Spodak's Project Teddy Bear
Nationally, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes, and according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), breast cancer is currently the second leading cause of cancer death in women, with an estimated 40,000 deaths this year. The Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade raises money that is awarded by the Avon Foundation, a public charity, for breast cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, support services and scientific research, including prevention and therapeutic vaccine studies. Beneficiaries range from leading cancer centers to community-based non-profit breast health programs.
Lisa started doing the “Avon Walk for Breast Cancer” (Avon Foundation for Women’s largest annual fundraising initiative) in 2002 after breast cancer hit her mom, her cousin and her step-mom in the course of just a few years. Over the past 7 years of walking and fundraising she has come to realize that almost everyone she knows has been touched by this disease. As she walks each year she hopes that each step, and each dollar, brings us closer to a cure.
I was lucky enough to win the auction on eBay and I hope my $76.55 will help to fight breast cancer and save lives! To find out more about this charity project and donate/bid, please visit lisawalks.com! |

Public service announcements for “Food, Inc.”
In June 2009, Ellen joined Kelly Preston, Martin Sheen and Alyssa Milano to support a tougher Childhood Nutrition Act. After viewing the new film “Food, Inc.”, which hit theaters in San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles, the celebs were moved to take action and filmed public service announcements (PSA) that will air online and on television. A half of a year later, TakePart, LLC finally put the video clips featuring Ellen online. In the three short clips, you can watch her answering your questions on eating healthy (on the go) and about how your food choices effects the environment. After taking part in the US Campaign for Burma, designing and signing an item for the Annual Celebrity Lunchbox Auction, giving a pep talk to leafleteers ready to protest “Proposition 8” and participating in the upcoming “2012: Time for Change” documentary, this was the fifth time the Canadian actress takes a firm stand and uses her celebrity status to spread the word about issues she cares about. Especially when it comes to change our food system her appeal should be heard because there is something everyone can do. Stop drinking sodas and other sweetened beverages, eat at home instead of eating out, go without meat one day a week (Meatless Mondays), buy organic or sustainable food with little or no pesticides or enjoy some fresh fruits and vegetables instead of pizza, burgers and all those snacks are only a few of many examples. Make sure to visit www.takepart.com/foodinc for further information, watch the videos here and start to make a difference today! |
